Extern operates across Ireland, and speaks up for and supports 20,000 children and young people who are facing social exclusion. With the help of Extern, children and young people in Ireland are able to overcome their challenges, empower positive change and support family unity.
Extern applied for a grant from the Hays Travel Foundation to fund the Pathways project, a Belfast based alternative education programme for young people aged 15 and 16 who are at risk of being excluded from mainstream education due to an abundance of factors. The aim of the Pathways project was to provide young people with valuable experience, the opportunity to advance their skills, all whilst gaining a Level 2 Occupational Studies qualification.
The participants were able to undertake courses in areas such as motor mechanics, joinery and brick laying which will allow the participants to go into securing a job or further education in these fields in the future. Not only did the course allow for skills to be developed, but participants were also able to form friendships, and develop their self-esteem.
The project was positively received, with participants stating that they have a ‘real talent for woodwork’ and that the course has ‘changed their life.’
