Embark on an extraordinary road trip holiday that seamlessly combines the dazzling energy of New York with the jaw-dropping beauty of Taughannock Fall’s natural wonders. This unforgettable adventure offers the perfect balance of vibrant city life and serene, awe-inspiring landscapes, catering to those who crave the best of both worlds. With car hire included you’ll have the freedom to chart your own course, hitting the open road and uncovering incredible destinations at your own pace.
Day 1: New York
The Big Apple will greet you the moment you step off the plane. Transfer to your hotel for an overnight stay at DoubleTree by Hilton, allowing you to settle in and soak up some of the city’s atmosphere before your adventure truly begins.
Take a leisurely evening stroll through Times Square, where dazzling digital billboards light up the night sky, or head to Central Park for a relaxing walk among its scenic pathways. If you’re in the mood for food, enjoy an unforgettable meal at one of the city’s renowned restaurants, from classic New York-style pizza to Michelin-star fine dining.
Day 2: Bay Shore
Collect your Cruise America RV from our New York City East NYE location in Bay Shore, 32 miles from JFK Airport. You won’t have to travel very far before the scenery changes from concrete to beautiful hillsides and leafy hamlets with the Hudson River as you're travelling companion. As it is your first day on the road, stay in the Newburgh area. Take a guided tour of West Point, the United States Military Academy, which must be booked in advance, or shop until you drop at the world’s largest collection of luxury designer outlets at Woodbury Common Outlet Mall.
Days 3-4: On the Road
Spend the next few days enjoying everything the Hudson Valley and the Catskills have to offer. Just north of Newburgh, enjoy the scenic splendour of the longest elevated pedestrian walkway in the world at the Walkway Over the Hudson before continuing to Hyde Park and the home and birthplace of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd and longest-serving president of the United States. Ride the Catskill Mountain Railroad from Kingston to the top of Hurley Mountain. Learn about one of the preeminent American families of the late 19th and early 20th centuries at the Vanderbilt Mansion Historic Site.
Days 5-6: On the Road
Continue north deeper into the beauty of New York State and into the great wilderness areas. The drive will take you through Albany, the state’s capital and its magnificent New York State Capitol building. Just north of Albany is Saratoga, which is famous for Saratoga Race Course, America’s oldest sporting venue. For the next few nights, we suggest staying in the vast expanse and enchanting peaks of the Adirondack mountains. Famous for Lake Placid, the home of the 1980 Winter Olympics, amongst many other natural attractions. Stop at Lake George, known as the “Queen of the American Lakes”, and get on the water with the Lake George Steamboat Company.
Day 7: Lake Ontario
Head out of the mountains and vast wilderness of the Adirondacks and towards the beautiful coastline of Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands-Seaway region of the state. Stop at Southwick Beach State Park, known for its outstanding swimming opportunities along its long sandy beach. Book well in advance for the opportunity to camp just meters from the beach. For all things nautical, stop in Clayton and visit the Antique Boat Museum, one of the best of its kind in North America. Take some time to stay at Southwick State Park, located on the coast, where hiking, swimming and family activities are never-ending.
Days 8-9: Upper New York State
Today is a long drive, and for the most part, it will be along the interstate as you head west through upper New York state. Break up the journey in the lovely coastal town of Oswego before arriving in the Niagara Falls region. Make a stop in Buffalo with its redeveloped waterfront before making a short journey to the magnificent and awe-inspiring Niagara Falls for the next 2 nights, allowing you a full day to explore all the attractions on offer. Explore the base of the falls aboard the Maid of the Mist or walk along the wooden walkways to get an up-close experience of Bridal Veil Falls. Feel free to stay for the evening illuminations with an array of colours and lights to gaze at.
Days 10-11: Finger Lakes
Head east across the open spaces of central New York State. Stop in the Finger Lakes region en route, with eleven long, narrow bodies of water cut into the hillsides, which makes it an outdoor paradise. It is also a region famous for its waterfalls, the main feature being Taughannock Falls. As you are approaching from the north, the small and pretty town of Geneva, sitting at the head of Seneca Lake, would make a great stop. Explore one of the 200 wineries in the Finger Lakes region, famous for their Riesling, and discover why this area is truly unique. For meat lovers, don’t miss the famous Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in downtown Syracuse and enjoy the nightlife and restaurants of the Armory Square district.
Day 12: Cooperstown
After leaving Syracuse, stop at Chittenango State Park to see its impressive 167-foot waterfall before continuing to Cooperstown, known as 'America's hometown. This charming town is renowned for being the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, only a short drive from Cooperstown. Experience acclaimed opera and musical theatre at the lakeside Glimmerglass Festival. Additionally, enjoy scenic rides through history on the Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad.
Days 13-14: On the Road
Your last full day is day 13, with a beautiful drive through the heart of the state along many of its quieter roads, passing by quaint little towns, covered bridges and idyllic rural landscapes. For those interested in iconic cultural events, stop for the night around the town of Bethel, which is where the legendary 1969 Woodstock Festival was held, one of the largest music festivals in history and which became synonymous with the counterculture of the 1960s. Visit Bethel Woods Centre to immerse in the culture and music of the 1960s and stand in the footprints of where Jimmy Hendrix made history in front of nearly half a million people. Finish the last stretch by driving back to the New York East depot, where you can hand over the RV and take a transfer to the DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton for the last night of the trip.
