Itinerary
Day One: Arrive in Boston, Massachusetts
Fly into Boston where your Best of New England road-trip gets underway with an overnight stay at Hilton Garden Inn Boston Logan Airport. You’ll hopefully have time to: stroll around Boston Common’s Frog Pond and Public Garden; pay a visit to Faneuil Hall Marketplace's Quincy Market, North Market, and South Market; meet New England Aquarium's 20,000 fish and aquatic animals; or follow the HarborWalk along Boston's waterfront to the Boston Tea Party Ship.
Day Two: Pick up your Motorhome
Today you’ll pick up your Cruise Canada C25 Motorhome and spend the day exploring more of Boston. Perhaps walk along The Freedom Trail and discover 16 historic sites and monuments including the State House, Old Granary and King's Chapel Burying Grounds, and Charlestown's USS Constitution frigate and Bunker Hill Monument. Visit Beacon Hill's Louisburg Square, Charles Street, and The Bull and Finch; inspiration for the 'Cheers' television programme.
Day Three: Boston, Massachusetts to Salem, Massachusetts – 1 hour/46 miles
Your journey continues towards Salem - infamous for the Witchcraft Trials of 1692; you can even take a guided tour of Witch House, home to Judge Jonathan Corwin one the magistrates. Visit Peabody Essex Museum with its extensive collection of global artworks and artefacts including a rebuilt Qing-era Chinese House. Stop by House of Seven Gables – the setting for Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel - and see the ‘Friendship of Salem’ replica tall-ship at Salem Historic Maritime National Historic Site.
Day Four: Salem, Massachusetts to Portland, Maine – 2 hours/95 miles
Drive to Portland. Wander around Portland’s Old Port district and walk along the 2.1-mile Eastern Promenade Trail. View the 18,000 works at Portland Museum of Art, tour the Portland Observatory, and visit Portland Head Light and Fort Williams Park. Experience Southworth Planetarium’s astronomy shows or take the ferry to the Casco Bay Islands. Explore International Cryptozoology Museum’s BigFoot mythology or Children's Museum and Theatre of Maine’s interactive fun.
Day Five: Portland, Maine to Acadia National Park, Maine – 3 hours/170 miles
Journey to Acadia National Park. Take a road-trip on the 27-mile Park Loop Road around Mount Desert Island - connecting Acadia's lakes, mountains, and shoreline and giving access to Sieur de Monts, Sand Beach, Otter Point, Jordan Pond, and Cadillac Mountain. Visit Bass Harbor Head Light and feel the spray at Thunder Hole. Stroll through 400+ plant species at the Wild Gardens of Acadia, board a whale-watching or puffin cruise from Bar Harbor, and walk along the 4.4-mile Ocean Path.
Day Six: Acadia National Park, Maine to St Johnsbury, Vermont - 4.5 hours/230 miles
Drive to St Johnsbury – the ‘Maple Center of the World’. Visit Maple Grove Sugar House Museum to learn about the sugaring process and sample pure maple syrup. Taste award-winning craft spirits on a tour of St Johnsbury Distillery. Gaze at Grace United Methodist Church’s Tiffany window. View first-run films at the four-screen Star Theatre. Admire Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium’s rotating natural science exhibits and STEM exploration station.
Day Seven: St Johnsbury, Vermont to Burlington, Vermont - 2.5 hours/110 miles
Travel to Burlington in Vermont today, located on the eastern shores of Lake Champlain. Explore the shops and eateries that line the downtown Church Street Marketplace. View the American folk and decorative art at Shelburne Museum. Delve into the life of a Revolutionary War hero at the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum. Learn about the area’s natural history at ECHO at the Leahy Center. Enjoy 360-degree views on a Spirit of Ethan Allen sunset cruise on Lake Champlain.
Day Eight: Burlington, Vermont to Montpelier, Vermont – 1 hour/40 miles
Vermont’s capital of Montpelier is your destination today. Pay a visit to the decorative and fine art collections at the 1859 Vermont State House. Dip into the state’s history through the multimedia exhibit and mural at the adjacent Vermont History Museum. Escape to the meadows, birch grove, and stone observation tower at Hubbard Park. Explore the ice cream-making process on a trip to Ben & Jerry’s Factory. Take your seat for modern and classic plays and musicals at the Lost Nation Theater.
Day Nine: Montpelier, Vermont to White Mountains, New Hampshire - 3.5 hours/150 miles
Continue into the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Drive along the iconic Kancamagus Highway that winds through the heart of the White Mountain National Forest for amazing views of the surrounding peaks, valleys, and waterfalls. Ride the Mount Washington Cog Railway and the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway. Take a nature walk through the Flume Gorge. Slide, swim, and splash at Whale’s Tale Waterpark. Meet the challenge of the simulated surfing wave at Akua Beach.
Day Ten: White Mountains, New Hampshire to Mystic, Connecticut – 4 hours/175 miles
Today begins with a journey to Mystic. Encounter sea lions, African penguins, and beluga whales at the Mystic Aquarium. Visit the 500+ historic watercrafts at Mystic Seaport Museum. Olde Mistick Village is a world apart from the ordinary mall experience with its unique collection of speciality shops restaurants. Try your hand at treetop climbing at TreeTrails Adventure Park. Step back in time at The Denison Homestead Museum. Visit Charles W. Morgan; the world’s last remaining wooden whale ship.
Day Eleven: Mystic, Connecticut to Providence, Rhode Island - 1.5 hours/70 miles
Journey to Providence, Rhode Island’s capital city. Go to see the replica of the Liberty Bell at Rhode Island State House. Admire the American art and silver on display at RISD Museum. Wander past College Hill’s 18th and 19th-century homes and delve into Federal Hill’s quaint shops and Italian cuisine. Take the kids to Roger Williams Park Zoo, Providence Children’s Museum, or Nazo Lab. Visit Waterplace Park’s WaterFire art installation that illuminates the tidal basin on summer nights.
Day Twelve: Drive to Boston - 1.5-hours/50 miles
Arriving back in Boston today; there’s time to fit in some last-minute sightseeing and shopping. View the artworks at Museum of Fine Arts and Isabella Steward Gardner Museum. Find true nostalgia on a Swan Boat ride in Boston Public Gardens. Explore ‘America’s Most-Beloved Ballpark’ on a tour of Fenway Park. Meet animals from around the globe at Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo. Indulge in retail therapy at Copley Place, Prudential Center, and along Newbury Street.
Day Thirteen: Return your Motorhome and fly home to the UK
Drop off your motor home today and continue to Boston Airport in time your flight back to the UK – hopefully with many happy memories to look back on of your Best of New England road-trip.
