Acropolis of Lindos

Top things to do:

Acropolis of Lindos

The ancient archaeological site known as the Acropolis of Lindos sits upon a steep cliff, overlooking the town of Lindos. One of the town’s most captivating destinations, the Acropolis houses a mix of ancient ruins including the Temple of Athena Lindia, a Hellenistic stoa, a Byzantine church, and the remnants of the Knights’ period fortification. The views from the site are simply breathtaking as the blue sea stretches as far as the eye can see providing the perfect backdrop to this historic landmark. You can also see the famous St Paul’s Bay which is another must visit spot!

Ticket prices can vary but they certainly won’t break the bank with under 18’s being allowed free entry and adult tickets costing around £7-£10. The walk from Lindos town to the Acropolis takes approximately 20-30 minutes and is quite steep and uneven in parts but generally fairly easy. It’s worth bearing in mind that there isn’t a lot of shade throughout so it can get very hot depending on when you visit. If you head up in the morning or evening you’ll probably find the experience a bit more pleasant due to cooler temperatures. There’s also plenty of cafes and shops on the lead up to the acropolis so make sure to grab a drink and head to the toilet as there is no facilities for this once you reach the top.

Hire a Boat

Hire a Boat

How does sailing your own speed boat through the waves of the Aegean Sea sound? Like a dream right! Well, you can hire a boat from the shores of Lindos beach and do just that. Grab your captain’s hat and get behind the wheel as you explore the beautiful coastline filled with serene beaches, magical coves, and stunning scenery. Don’t worry, you don’t need any sort of licence in order to drive the boat and it’s actually super simple making it a great day out for everyone! Prices tend to be around €80 an hour with some places offering discounts for longer journeys. Although a little warning to anyone who suffers with sea sickness, the waters can get quite choppy!

Day Trip to Symi Island

As you arrive onto the charming island of Symi you will be welcomed with the sight of colourful buildings cascading down the cliffside. Contrasting beautifully with the blue skies and turquoise sea, the view is certainly nothing short of post card worthy. On this culture rich island, you’ll have the chance to visit Panormitis monastery which is dedicated to Archangel Michael. Located on the beachfront, this Venetian style monastery houses amazing artefacts and impressive paintings by local artists. Not the mention the famous silver icon of the Archangel. You can also take some time to explore the town of Symi, which is famous for its ship building industry as well as its sea sponge diving heritage!

Day Trip to Symi Island

Ferries towards Symi Island typically leave from Rhodes Town and sailings take around 1-1.5 hours. However, there are plenty of companies which offer transport from Lindos to Rhodes Town as well as local buses running frequently, providing you with a hassle free trip. It’s worth bearing in mind that local buses can get busy during peak times so if you’re looking for a more relaxed journey, booking onto a coach trip might be the way to go. Prices do vary quite a bit depending on how you choose to get there, who you book with and if you add on any tours so make sure to shop around to find the best deal!

Dionysos

Food Recommendations:

First up has to be my absolute favourite eatery of the whole holiday, Dionysos! Located in the heart of Lindos village, this restaurant offers breathtaking views from the rooftop terrace and an unbeatable atmosphere to match! The modern but cozy design sets the stage for an unforgettable dining experience providing a sense of comfortable luxury.

But now onto the good stuff… let’s talk food! Comprised of a mix of mediterranean cuisine, the impressive menu offers something for everyone from sensational seafood to a variety of vegetarian dishes. A must try for starters is the pita bread & dips! It might sound basic, but I promise you it won’t disappoint! With various types of pita bread baked to perfection and a selection of humus, tzatziki, spicy cheese and aubergine dips, your taste buds will be left wanting more. As for mains your spoilt for choice! Whether you fancy pasta, risotto, seafood or a hearty meat dish, every meal is freshly made with only the best ingredients. From sea bass on a bed of rocket and topped with prosciutto and pesto sauce to pork tenderloin seasoned with thyme, honey and mustard this impressive menu has it all.

Byzantino

Byzantino

This cosy restaurant immediatley portrays a welcoming atmophere with friendly staff ready to make your evening an absolute delight. Serving authentic Mediterranean cuisine, you’ll find no shortage of delicious dishes to choose from. The vegetable risotto was a personal favourite of mine, but I of course couldn’t end my stay without trying the vegetarian moussaka. This traditional Greek dish is the perfect hearty meal packed with potatoes, aubergines, and onions then topped with tomatoes, lentils and bechamel sauce. If you’re a seafood lover then the seabass coated in lemon and almond sauce is a must try!  Sit back and enjoy your meal from the rooftop terrace as you admire the view of the Lindos Acropolis to really top off the whole experience.

Yanni’s Bar

Yanni’s Bar is a great all-rounder whether you’re looking for somewhere to grab a few drinks or to enjoy a delicious breakfast, this is your place! The modern décor gives an elegant and luxurious feel, meaning you can sit back and relax in style. The fancy cocktail menu has everything from your classic martinis to the fun fire-fuelled tikis. But despite its vibrant evening atmosphere, it also makes a great place to start your day for breakfast. All the food was freshly made and presented immaculately, perfect for those all-important insta snaps. The eggs benedict and full English are both dishes that would be top of our recommendations but there was so much more we wish we had time to try!
