Spain’s New Travel Rules: What You Need to Know
02/12/2024
As the holiday season approaches, many British travellers are planning their winter getaways to Spain, one of Europe’s most beloved destinations. However, as of 2nd December 2024, a new travel regulation will come into effect for British holidaymakers jetting off to Spain’s golden sands.
But don’t worry! Whether you're planning a relaxing beach holiday, a cultural city break, or an adventurous hiking trip in the Spanish countryside, here's what you need to know about Spain’s new travel rules.
What Are the New Travel Rules for Spain from December 2024?
The new regulations are part of Spain’s efforts to strengthen border security and improve public safety.
Personal Data Requirements
Hotels have long recorded some personal details upon check-in. However, from Monday 2nd December, the Spanish government is extending the list of data required for hotels and accommodation to collect. Among this list, the new accommodation rules require all guests over the age of 14 to provide their:
- Full Name
- Gender
- Nationality
- Passport number
- Date of birth
- Home address
- Landline phone number (if you have one)
- Mobile phone number
- Email address
- Means of Accommodation Payment
While under-14s will not need to provide this information, adults travelling with them must explain the relationship they have with the children.
How Will These Changes Affect British Holidaymakers?
While the introduction of this extended data system will likely be a straightforward process, as with most new rules, there may be a teething process. So, if you are jetting off on a Spanish holiday soon, it may take a little longer for you to check into your hotel as staff adapt to the changes. Most information needed is available on your passport documents, so ensure you have these ready to help.
What Should You Do Now to Prepare for Your Holiday to Spain?
To avoid any stress before your trip, here’s a checklist of things you can do now:
Check Over Your Details
The best thing you can do to prepare for Spain’s new travel rules is to make sure you know all of your up-to-date information i.e. your email address and phone number.
Confirm Spain's Customs Rules
If you're bringing valuable items or large sums of money into Spain, check the customs guidelines to ensure you comply with regulations.
Check Your Passport
Make sure your passport is valid for at least three months after your planned departure from Spain.
Pack a Pen
Simple yet effective. Some accommodation providers may opt for good old-fashioned pen-and-paper forms to collect their data. In these cases, a handy extra pen may be your answer to a seamless check-in.
