Dreaming of fresh powder snow, stunning mountain views, and the rush of carving down the slopes? Before you hit the mountains, you might want to hear these expert tips and insider insights! We caught up with Ski Holiday expert David Smith from Crystal Ski Holidays to get his top tips- from bagging a bargain and choosing the right resort to his favourite seasons and skiing memories. Let's dive in!
Why do you love to Ski?
“The mountains bring the best out of everyone- its medicine for the mind. Skiing Holidays let me leave life behind and become the best version of myself, it’s such a unique opportunity. If you’ve done a cruise, cycling, or Disney holiday and are wondering ‘what’s next?’ The answer is Ski!”
What is the best time of year to book a ski holiday?
“One of my favourite times to ski is early March when the snow is good, and the weather starts to get warmer. I recommend getting up early and catching the first lifts. As the sun begins to peak at around 2pm, make your way down and head to the pool to unwind. My big tip – make sure to take factor 50! The temperatures can soar on the slopes.”
The ski season runs from Early December to mid-April. February is among the most popular, especially for families, thanks to its peak snow conditions that coincide with the half term school holidays.
Should I book last minute or in advance?
“Booking in advance is the best way to bag a dream deal. Especially if you have a list of must-haves. From favourite resorts and slopes right down to families looking for specific multi room types, getting in early gets you what you want at a great price. We have some amazing offers for next season with Crystal. And if you don’t care where, or what, there are some really good last minute Ski bargains now too.”
What destinations are more budget or family friendly?
“For budget packages, you can’t go wrong with Bulgaria or Andorra. For families, the Nordics offer beginner friendly skiing with tonnes to do for little ones who may not wish to ski every day.”
Do you have a favourite resort?
“It’s hard to pick a favourite. But I absolutely love the Dolomites in Italy. Over 1,200km of pistes, frozen waterfalls, hidden valleys, glacier trekking- there’s so much to enjoy in this UNESCO world heritage site. Plus, the Alpen glow that turns the landscape a soft pink is something special.”
What makes Ski Holidays so unique?
“The community! I go skiing every year with a group of 25 people. Everyone is different. Different ages, ability, backgrounds. There is so much energy and enthusiasm it’s a week I look forward to every year. My big piece of advice for first time skiers? Don’t let the worry of not fitting in stop you. Skiing is for everyone and means a lot of different things for different people. No two skiers are the same.”
What can I do beyond the slopes with Crystal?
"Snow sports is the big draw of skiing holidays. But Crystal offer a lot more. From snowmobile rides in Norway’s backcountry to ziplining 2,500 feet (30 floor building) between two mountains in Whistler, the fun never stops. With specially spa hotels, there’s nothing better than a steam room after a day on the slopes- we even have hotels where the essential oils change at different times of the day. And of course, Après Ski- the legendary part of any ski holiday. And in my opinion, Austria still does it the best!"
What makes Crystal stand out compared to other ski operators?
“Simple Answer? Choice, Value and Reassurance. We put together packages for every kind of skier. With 150 resorts across 14 countries departing from 19 UK regional airports, we have the freedom of choice to craft your perfect getaway. Plus, with reps in resort, and 24/7 support via the Crystal App, you have complete peace of mind and handy inside information at your fingertips.”
What are your most memorable ski moments?
“There’re so many! From my earliest experiences in Austria at 8 or 9 years old, going to ski school on a traditional horse drawn carriage every morning to just recently when I went to Kitzbhuel during the World Cup and skied the notorious Streif after the tournament with all the left behind banners and finish- I have amazing experiences throughout my life.”
“But my favourite must be Whistler. I battled some hardcore, off the beaten track ski routes, certainly not for beginners. The types of routes you need to know where they are to find them. I came down a double black diamond called the cirque on a fresh powder day and could touch both cliffsides if I tried. It was an unreal experience.”
